Comme Des Fuckdown

My friend Mark Hunter showed some of his party photos and editorial work in Beverly Hills last month. Jeremy Scott, Kimberly Gordon (founder of Wildfox), Atlanta de Cadenet, Daveigh Chase, and hundreds of our friends came out to support Mark.

Real Hip-Hop with my man KRS ONE.
I hadn’t been out for like a week, but last night around midnight I got the text to get down to my friend Adam’s party, and I knew I couldn’t miss it. In about twelve minutes I went from kicking back on my couch to walking into AFEX as KRS ONE approached the stage.
For the next two hours the crowd lost their minds as he dropped everything from Criminal Minded and Sounds of The Police to covers of Biggie and Tupac to freestyles over Vivaldi. When it seemed like shit couldn’t get any crazier, Doug E. Fresh stepped to the stage and crushed some beatbox for KRS and Mad Lion, then dropped a lesson on how to Dougie. This is why I love LA, on any given night you never know what can happen in fifteen minutes…

Paul Smith, Daido, & Me — Ricoh GR1, Kodak Ektar 100
A few days ago I was walking through Paul Smith with my new Ricoh GR1 and I saw this collection of rare books by Daido Moriyama, an iconic Japanese photographer who used the same camera in his later street photography.
I love the GR1 a lot, it’s super light and thin with an amazingly sharp 28mm wide lens and manual control of aperture and EV — I’ve owned the Yashica T4 and Contax T2, which are great, and very popular with hip kids who fetishize all things analog, but I like this more, it’s significantly wider than the Yashica or Contax and a lot more fun to shoot.
I love film, technically it’s sharper than digital and I like the colour and tonality you can achieve without digital manipulation or some ridiculous filter or mobile app that smears gradients on a picture and pastes on a gamma shift and Fujichrome film border. I try to push aside any romantic notions or fake-nostalgia associated with it, but in that Walter Benjamin way, I appreciate the tactile product it yields and respect each frame I shoot more, which I believe allows me to make better pictures. It is just a toy though, another medium to capture and create the world aroumd me — by nature it’s impractical, like handwriting a letter in the age of digital correspondence… so I don’t mind feeling a little affection for it.
