Hooked On The Dolls

Summer of ‘93 — The Dolls (Mia Moretti & Caitlin Moe)

I can’t stop listening to this new single by my friends Mia and Caitlin — the warm, sexy beats and 90s analog R&B vibe take me back to my childhood, all the lavish summer memories that have become clichés because they’re so real and innocent and because we didn’t have any worries back then, or maybe we did but they all faded away and just left the sunshine and pretty girls and never going home because the party never ended… it feels like TLC before CrazySexyCool and Tony! Toni! Tone! before “Lets Get Down,” which, for me, is pretty much perfect.

I can’t believe it’s been two years since I posted a video of Mia & Caitlin performing in Hollywood, but from the moment we met, I knew they were special — I’m so excited for them and all of their success. You can download Summer of ‘93 for free, and can win this really dope Summer of ‘93 limited edition silkscreen poster (designed by our friend Curtis Kulig / LOVE ME) by hashtagging #summerof93 and #thedolls on Tumblr, Twitter, or Instagram.

Art should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.    —  keith haring

This weekend Michael Miller invited me to the opening of his Photography Exhibit at KNOWN GALLERY to celebrate the release of his book, West Coast Hip-Hop: A History In Pictures.
A Los Angeles native, Miller is responsible for many the iconic photographs that define 1990s West Coast Hip-Hop: Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Warren G, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Cypress Hill, et al… With thousands of portraits and over 300 album covers, his portfolio is like KDAY come to life, and I was honoured to meet such a prolific music historian and see his incredible work.
The exhibit was only open to the public this weekend, but you can buy Michael Miller’s book at Over The Edge, and you can find my photos from the opening reception at The Cobrasnake.

I photographed Mr. Brainwash (Thierry Guetta) in Hollywood last week. We talked about my photos of the party at his studio last month and his exhibition that opens tonight.

The problem facing modern man now is compounded by the increasing power of technology and its misuse by those in power who wish only to control. The mentality of people who are motivated by profits at the expense of human needs is perfect for the computer. Computers are completely rational. They save time and money. They can keep records of every transaction. Money is the opposite of magic. Art is magic. The worlds of art and money are constantly intermingling. To survive this mixture the magic in art has to be applied in new ways. Magic must always triumph.
