Comme Des Fuckdown

Real Hip-Hop with my man KRS ONE.
I hadn’t been out for like a week, but last night around midnight I got the text to get down to my friend Adam’s party, and I knew I couldn’t miss it. In about twelve minutes I went from kicking back on my couch to walking into AFEX as KRS ONE approached the stage.
For the next two hours the crowd lost their minds as he dropped everything from Criminal Minded and Sounds of The Police to covers of Biggie and Tupac to freestyles over Vivaldi. When it seemed like shit couldn’t get any crazier, Doug E. Fresh stepped to the stage and crushed some beatbox for KRS and Mad Lion, then dropped a lesson on how to Dougie. This is why I love LA, on any given night you never know what can happen in fifteen minutes…

Power 106 Jumpoff Mix — DJ Fashen

My man Fashen just laid down a really dope mix for Power 106 here in Los Angeles. He’s one of a handful of DJs who’s compared to DJ AM and he definitely has the skills to back up his rep. I’ve been starting my cardio with this all week, it’s as good as radio gets.

DJ AM - Live from Winter Music Conference (WMC) 2008

I’ve been trying to decide whether or not to post this for a while now… A little bit of me wants to keep it for myself and my close friends, but ultimately I think everyone should get to enjoy it.

I love this mix a lot and it never seems to get old. Right now I’m poolside, about to blast it while I watch the sun set with some friends. But whether you’re freezing your ass off somewhere snowy or getting freaky on a beach in Australia, this mix will definitely warm you up a little bit.

Vinyl Sunday - DJ AM Editon
This weekend The Cobra Shop put my friend Adam Goldstein’s record collection up for sale, with all proceeds going to his charity. It was an emotional event, but it was really great to see people come out to support the cause and take home some of the best and rarest records ever made.
I was only around for a few hours but in that time I saw countless legendary DJs come to flip through the crates along with all of the fans and collectors. And honestly, it was probably one of the most incredible collection of good records in one place, thousands of pieces of vinyl and I did not see one bad record - every row, every stack, I could flip to a random LP and it was good. Adam will be missed by everyone who knew him, but he’ll always live on through his music.

Last night, on the three-year anniversary of the party that was started at LAX by Steve, AM, and Mark, was the final Banana Split. The night was sort of a memorial for DJ AM, and some of his best friends (and some of the best DJs from around the world) came out to honour him - DJ A-Trak, Cut Chemist, Z-Trip, Justice, Steve Aoki, and a lot of others spun for their homie. I had just started hanging out with Mark, and Steve, and Adam when the night started, and it’s wild to think that it’s been three years… how much has changed but also how fast it’s happened. I went with Ivey, Hanna, and some other friends - we only stayed for a little while but the vibe was like I’ve never seen before and it was really good seeing everyone, three years of friends and memories.

Motown Breakdown - DJ Z-Trip

It was just announced that Z-Trip is taking over DJ AM’s residency at RAIN in Las Vegas, and I can’t think of anyone better suited for the job. Z-Trip has been around for almost two decades, and is kind of the father of mashups. More than being one of the best mix-DJs ever, he’s a cool dude - he devoted all of 2008 to campaigning with Shepard Fairey for Barack Obama and used every show and appearance to activate young Americans to get out and vote. He also DJed the LA victory party which is one of the most amazing and memorable nights of my entire life.

A-Trak practicing at Pase Rock’s house before Adam’s memorial. Ridiculous, this kid won the DMC (world DJ competition) when he was barely tall enough to see over the decks.
