Home is wherever I’m with you.

— Edward Sharpe

This time last week I had just arrived at my friend’s place in Palm Springs, I don’t really plan or prepare for things, so when she called me last Thursday night and told me to come stay with her for Coachella, I have to think about it, I just got in my car and started driving. The weekend turned out to be amazing, it was great to escape from LA for a few days, I got to spend time with my favorite people in the entire world, and even with all of the chaos of the festival it was probably the most relaxing weekend I’ve had in years.

My friends Mark and Rony did a great job of documenting Coachella and you should definitely check out their photos in addition to the ones I’ll be posting over the next few days.  Also, I redesigned my site. It’s the same basic style but I increased the width and rearranged some things so now my photos appear almost 50% larger (I really like it a lot, think of it as the XL version).

Coachella - DAY 1
Got to Palm Springs this morning, slept for a few hours, then hit the pool. Our place has a waterslide! Ivey and Victoria just left for the concert to see Passion Pit and Vampire Weekend, I’m going to chill for a little then meet some friends before the party at Merv Griffin’s tonight.

ESCAPE FROM LA! (photo by me)
If you’ve been to Coachella before, you know the concert is really just what you to to kill time before the parties every night. Sure, there’s an Urban Outfitters mixtape worth of amazing music, but after four hours of parking and security just to get in the front door, I can’t imagine standing half a mile from the stage and getting excited about seeing an a few singles from even my favorite band (VIP passes are about as exclusive as a Costco membership, and even if you’ve got the real hookup, everyone with an artist badge is totally over it). I might show up to kick it with some friends who are performing, but this year I’m probably skipping the concert completely.
Instead of Jay-Z and Gorillaz, here’s my personal lineup:
OASIS at Merv Griffin’s estate friday night (Guys & Dolls party)
Alexa Chung’s Lacoste Party (with Chris Holmes and Devendra Banhart)
Brent Bolthouse’s Neon Carnival with 944 and A|X
Jeremy Scott TOGA PARTY (can’t wait for this!!!)
1OAK/Don’t Tell My Booker Shiny Toy Guns party
BPM x Music Loves Fashion at the Riviera Palm Springs
ANTHEM Magazine Lagoon
Desert Gold at the Ace
and a secret show by Phoenix at….

Hope everyone has an amazing weekend, hit me up if you’ll be in Indio.

It could get better than this, but my karma is not that good.
Last week began with a Snoop Dogg show at Teddys and ended with the 15th Anniversary Victoria Secret party at Trousdale - both events sucked but each made for an amazing night. Really, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world as long as you’re with your friends.
I’m not sure how the Snoop concert came about, I just got a text as 11pm requesting that I get my ass to the Roosevelt asap, and that the entire hotel was a hot mess. I arrived as a caravan of LAPD cars and a fire truck began blocking off Hollywood Blvd, I was probably the last one in before club doors were shut for the night. The usual crowd showed up, rockstars and actors and rich kids, but also hundreds of random people filling the lobby while a few DJs warmed up with hip-hop sets… and something about Star Wars I guess, storm troopers patrolled the hallways and a dude in a darth vader costume did some shit with a light stick on stage, there was an Adidas logo too. Anyway, met up with Ivey and Hanna and danced and partied for a few hours before Snoop finally walked on stage around 1am. The crowd went wild as he grabbed the mic, but before speaking a word the fire marshall hit the lights and shut off the sound, the party was over. As everyone pushed for the exits Ivey, Hanna, and I headed for the basement, we were rushing out the back as Lindsay Lohan was rushing towards us with kind of a bitchy face but a pretty sweet Ashish “SAME OLD CHIC” sequin dress, Ivey and I looked at each other and in unison looked back at her to shout, “She doesn’t even go here!”  It was kind of hilarious, possibly the best part of the night. Sucked that we didn’t get to see Snoop but we had a lot of fun.
A few random parties and things Tuesday and Wednesday, then the Victoria Secret party Thursday. Some typical list drama at the event and nobody really seemed like they wanted to be there, it was much less fun than the average Tuesdays or Fridays so Victoria and I headed to Drais. Got upstairs, grabbed a cabana, and saw a few friends. I hadn’t got a “hi” out before turning around to see Victoria rip off her shirt and dive into the pool… I didn’t ask why, I just tore off my pants and cannonballed in after her. I don’t think the bottle-buying douchebags or the stone-faced bouncers knew what to make of it, but we were having a blast, we always do. Life’s fun if you can make fun of yourself.
In Fear & Loathing, HST says, “there was a certain bent appeal in the notion of running a savage burn on one Las Vegas hotel, and then just wheeling across town and checking into another.” Replace Vegas hotel with Hollywood hot spot and that pretty much sums it up.
